Brandon Sport And Social Club [BSSC]
Although the BSSC encourages participants to have a good time, alcohol or any other controlled substances are not allowed at any BSSC League events. Any player found to be under the influence of alcohol or any other controlled substance will be ejected from the league.
A.) FACILITIES The BSSC rents facilities in order to provide our leagues. Please respect the facilities so we can continue using them. If we lose our permit the season is over.
B.) Rosters
-
6 players on the floor at one time at least two must be of the opposite gender.
-
BSSC recommends teams of 8 to avoid defaulting
-
A minimum of 4 players must be present to start the game. At least one must be the opposite gender. If the minimum requirement isn’t met the team that is short will lose by default and matches recorded will be 7-0
-
If both captains agree, the minimum requirement rule can be waived and the game will count towards the standings
-
Teams are encouraged to have subs to avoid defaults
-
Teams are encouraged to arrive at the gym 10 minutes before the posted game time
-
If a team is not ready 10 minutes after the posted game time they will lose by default.Matches recorded will be 7-0. We recommend the game be played regardless if possible.
-
A game that starts late will be a short game. Games must end on time. NO EXCEPTIONS
C.) Officiating
-
Games are self officiated. Players are responsible to make their own calls. When a player is hit they must raise their hand and move off the playing court immediately
-
Players must be honest when hit, don’t assume know one saw you. If a team continues to not call themselves out, the Court Monitor will be forced to step in and make the calls. If the same player continues to not call him or herself out they will be asked to sit out.
-
Any reckless, aggressive, threatening or unsportsmanlike behavior will result in being ejected from the game. If this behavior continues the player may be ejected from the league. If this is a team wide issue, the team may be ejected from the league.
The Court Monitor has the right to
Judgment calls by the Court Monitor are final and should not be protested under any circumstance. Players or teams that argue with the Court Monitor will be subject to suspension or ejection from the league
-
No arguing
-
No swearing- towards the Court Monitor is a double no
-
No complaining
-
The Court Monitors are not referees and are there to keep the game running smooth and ensure teams and players follow the rules. They have the right to make any player sit out or leave the gym. If asked to do either, you must do immediately.
D.) Game Play
-
Games will be 50 minutes long. Teams will play as many matches within the 50 minutes as they can. Whichever team wins the most matches gets the win and two points.
-
The Captains should confirm the score after each match.
-
6 Foam NADA Balls will be used for the game
-
The game will start by placing 6 balls on the centerline. Teams will stand at the back wall or back line when gyms don’t have a wall.
-
In regular season play a tie is a tie. In playoff games, there will be one sudden death match.
-
Once the allotted time is up, the team with the most players remaining wins.
E.) Rules
-
Players are not allowed to cross the centerline, but may lean across to get a ball, as long as the player’s foot does not cross the line.
-
Players may pass a ball to a teammate but they must throw the ball and if the catching player drops the ball they are out. No kicking the ball or rolling the ball to a teammate.
-
Player's must bring the ball back behind the attack line during the opening rush before they throw the ball.
-
If a player crosses the center line they are out.
-
Players are not allowed to hold more than one ball at a time. If a player holds two balls he must toss one to another player on there team and if they drop it that player is out or miss it all together the player tossing it is out.
-
If a player is holding a ball they are not allowed to catch another ball if they do the thrower is not out.
-
If a player drops a ball to catch another they are out. Once a player is holding a ball he cannot drop it or set it down.
-
Players are not allowed to hide behind any door ways, curtains etc…
-
A ball is dead once it hits the floor, ceiling, curtain or any other obstruction on the playing court, a player or another ball.
-
Once a player is hit they must raise their hand and leave the playing surface immediately
-
Players have 10 seconds to throw a ball. If they do not throw the ball within 10 seconds they must give the ball to the opposing team. There is no clock so players must play by the honor policy.
-
Players are not allowed to stockpile balls on their side of the playing field.
-
Both Captains and the Court Monitors should outline any out of bounds areas. If the ball goes out of bounds, the player closest to where the ball left the playing surface can leave to get the ball. They must get the ball and return. The player that leaves to get the ball is out of play and cannot be hit or hit someone else. The player should let it be known they are getting the ball by raising their hand and verbally letting the other team know. If there are subs on the sidelines they may place the ball inside the playing surface where it exited. They cannot pass the ball to a teammate. If the ball enters another games playing surface, leave the ball until the other game passes it over or the Court Monitor can get to it.
-
Once a player is hit with a ball they are out, except hits above the shoulder.
-
If a player hits another player in the head or above the shoulders that is considered a head shot and you are still in the game.
-
If a ball hits a player below the shoulders and then the ball bounces and hit their head that is not a headshot. They are out.
-
If a player catches a ball the thrower is out and the team that caught the ball can have another player enter back into the game if a player on their team had previously been knocked out.
-
Players re-enter the game in the same order they were knocked out. (First out – first in)
-
A player holding a ball can use the ball to deflect a thrown ball away. But if the player fumbles and drops the ball they are holding when deflecting another ball they are out.
-
A player holding a ball can use it to deflect another thrown ball away but if the thrown ball hits your body anywhere other then from the elbow to the hand that you are in contact the ball with you are out.
-
You cannot save a player by catching the ball after a player was hit.
The game continues until all of the members of one side are out, and then a new game begins.
GETTING OUT There are 4 main ways you can get out
- Direct hit – a ball thrown by an opposing player hits you directly (except in the head-head shots you will be allowed to stay on the floor)
- Hit deflected from your own ball - a ball thrown by an opposing player hits your ball, then strikes you anywhere except your elbow to your hand that is in contact with the held ball.
- Dropped ball - a ball thrown by an opposing player hits your ball, causing you to drop your ball unintentionally
- Caught ball – your thrown ball is caught by the opposing team (this will also allow someone from their team to come back in)
Details
- Your clothes (including shoelaces and jewelry) are considered part of your person
- Once a ball touches the floor, wall or ceiling it is dead and can no longer get anyone out. This is also true if it hits an out player, whether on or off the court.
- Once a ball hits another player (or their ball) it can no longer get anyone out.
- Once out, the player should raise their hand to show they are no longer in play and line up at the side of the court in the order they got out.
CATCHES
- Aside from getting the thrower out, a caught ball also allows the return of an “out” player from the catcher’s team. If you make a catch, make sure to loudly call someone back in.
- “Out” players return in the same order they got out – first out, first in.
- If you get hit by a ball that is then caught by someone else on your team, you are still out.
- When returning to play as a result of a caught ball, you should raise your hand and walk directly to the back of the court. During this time you are immune. Once you touch the back wall (or pick up a ball) you’re active and back in the game.
BASIC SPORTSMANSHIP
- Realize that everyone is there to have fun, and while competitive, the games are to remain cordial and friendly at all times, without exception.
- All games are self-officiated and you are responsible for calling yourself out – be honest.
- In the instance of a dispute, the affected player shall remain in without argument.
SPORTSMANSHIP - AFTER YOU GET OUT
- When you get hit, please raise your hand as a visible indicator that you are out. Do NOT remain ambiguously in/out in an attempt to draw additional throws.
- Refrain from excessive outbursts, swearing or name calling.
- Once out, calmly surrender any balls you're holding to the field of play. They should be simply dropped or passed to a teammate. They should NOT continue to be thrown at opponents (even your friends) or spiked in disgust.
- When leaving the field of play, you should go directly to the "out" area without purposely affecting gameplay - this includes shielding a teammate, attempting to block incoming balls, or passing balls not already in your possession to your team.
- Once in the "out" queue, it IS permissible to use your foot to stop a ball from rolling to the other team, as long as you remain in line. It is also permissible to kick any balls at your feet to your teammates.
SPORTSMANSHIP - DISPUTE RESOLUTION
First off, let me to reiterate the most important rule of doodgeball: Thou shalt have FUN! Let's remember that even though we're playing a kids game, we're all adults. Although it's natural for there to be the occasional dispute, these should always be handled respectfully.
Our games are self-officiated, and we depend on our participants to have the integrity and honesty to call themselves out when they get hit.
If someone appears to get hit and does not leave the court, you are certainly welcome to point this out and respectfully challenge them. In most instances they are not clear on the rules or may not have noticed, and will go out without argument. Keep in mind, there's always the possibility that you were mistaken yourself (even if it seemed obvious).
However, if the player maintains they were not out, they stay in - unequivocally. This is true even in instances where it is 100% certain they are out. Under no circumstances should there be any further debate, insinuation or bickering whatsoever. The game should simply continue on in a friendly manner and rely on dodgeball karma to restore justice.
We've been extremely lucky to attract a great group of friendly players with outstanding sportsmanship. As long as we agree to respect one another and focus on having fun, there's no reason that we can't continue enjoying the awesomeness of dodgeball for a long time to come.
If our games end up losing that spirit of fun to unsportsmanlike like conduct, we'll soon find that no one wants to play anymore. Under no circumstances will we let that happen. It's understood that we're all human and may not always exhibit perfect sportsmanship in the heat of battle. In the event of minor instances, the organizers will happily reiterate our rules and expect return to cordial play. Should there be any continued disruption, we may less happily request that those involved leave the game for the day (or at least put them on the same team and make them hold hands). Under extreme or recurring circumstances, the offenders will be be banned from the group and asked not to return.
JR Reid Exclusive Rules
The bold black outside court is the outside boundaries if you step outside of this court to avoid a thrown ball you are considered out.
When a team gets down to one player that player is to remain inside the green court till they either catch an opponents ball to allow one of your own back on the court or till your hit with an opponents ball which then ends the match.
